Stage Makeup: Basics For Male Characters

Picture

Every performer should have at least a basic stage makeup kit like the one on the right.

Most stores are pretty good about helping you pick the right shade for your skin color, but if you've never bought a makeup kit before here's a good tip for you.  Make sure to get the kit from a store that will test the foundation on the inside of your wrist.  Your foundation should match pretty closely with the color of the skin on the inside of the wrist, but one shade darker wouldn't hurt.  You just want to avoid a situation where your face looks like a completely different color than your ears and neck.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Here are some great general makeup tutorials. They may not all apply to your character (the forehead ones in particular are typically not essential).

One important thing not covered here is called "blending".  You may be able to find other tutorials for that, or you can ask an experienced actor to teach you. Basically, it just means that once you apply highlights and shadows, you want to blend the edges a little bit so that they blend more naturally into the look of your face, so you don't look like a clown.
