Basic Essentials For Staging A Musical

To ensure that you can stage your musical successfully, here is a list of the essential things you will need:

  • Your musical of choice
  • Licensing (permission) and materials for said musical (see Music Theatre International, or similar)
  • A director, and likely a choreographer
  • Other production staff if possible
  • A cast of 10+ people
  • A large room to rehearse in
  • Portable speakers and a music player
  • A venue for performances (needs to have a stage with rooms behind it)
  • Insurance (if renting a venue, you'll likely need special event coverage of at least $1,000,000)
  • A physical flyer and online marketing
  • Auditions or alternative process for choosing who will play each role
  • Three week minimum for rehearsals, ideally more like like six to eight
  • Tech Week in your performance venue
  • Volunteers: as many as possible
  • Clear directions for said volunteers
  • Paperwork for your performers/volunteers/staff to sign (at least a liability/media waiver)
  • $1,000 minimum for costumes, unless performers wear their own clothes
  • At least 10 wireless microphone systems (see HERE and HERE) and/OR
  • 1-3 floor microphones for the front of the stage (see www.bartlettaudio.com)
  • A sound board
  • Amplifiers (speakers) so the performers and audience can hear
  • Cue sheets so the cast, staff, and volunteers know when to do things during the performances
  • Something to set the scene for the musical.  It can be your regular interior, or you can use scenery
